Ray Charles was a pioneer in the genre of soul music during the 1950’s by fusing rhythm and blues, gospel and blues styles into his early recordings.
He went completely blind by the age of seven – apparently due to glaucoma.
He developed his musical talent at the School for Deaf and Blind in St. Augustine, Florida from 1937 to 1945.
At 24 he recorded his own composition “I Got A Woman” and the song became his first #1 hit and brought him to National prominence.
He passed away on 10th June 2004 due to liver failure at the age of 73 – but his music lives on for all to enjoy.
