Mayor of The Hills Shire, Dr Michelle Byrne, welcomed and congratulated young sporting stars from the Western Sydney Academy of Sport on Thursday, August 22.

The local athletes, who attended a ceremony at Council, have been a part of the Academy of Sport’s 2018/19 programs which have included developmental training courses to help up-and-coming athletes residing in western Sydney to reach their full sporting potential.

“I would like to congratulate all the Western Sydney Academy of Sport athletes who have undertaken their scholarships across a wide range of sports,” Mayor Byrne said.

“It’s an achievement in itself to be accepted into such an elite program.

“It also reflects all the hard work, commitment, training and passion these incredibly talented athletes have for their respective sport.

“I look forward to seeing these athletes using the knowledge and skills developed at the Academy to grow and improve, and I can’t wait to see what they get up to next,” Mayor Byrne added.

Western Sydney Academy of Sport Chief Executive Officer Martin Bullock said:

“The Hills region provides a significant number of athletes within our programs annually, and this is a reflection of the LGA’s large pool of talented young sports people, and the wonderful level of sporting amenities provided by Council to encourage participation and performance levels,” Mr Bullock added.

The Academy’s programs are targeted at pre-elite athletes who demonstrate skill and talent with the goal of progressing within their discipline.

The Academy aims to develop athletes into outstanding sports citizens by way of technical skill development, athlete education and personal development.
