Victims of sexual assault should be prioritised, but across Australia the reality is often very different, particularly in regional and remote areas.
Campaigner from Fair Agenda, Daisy Gardener says Western Australia highlights a grim picture, with some women in the Peel region reporting travel distances of 150km to receive care, while other women in Kalgoorlie say wait times for forensic medical examination are as long as 12 hours.
Ms Gardener says they’ve been fighting the issue for two years and recently attended WA Parliament alongside two lived experience advocates to push for reform.
The Wire has also contacted Western Australia’s Health Minister for further comment.
