Local residents encouraged to ‘Discover Cumberland’

Written by on 27 October 2019

Cumberland Council is encouraging residents new to the area to attend one of its free educational Discover Cumberland workshops or bus tours next month.

Cumberland Local Government Area has a high level of new arrivals with 25% of the population having arrived in Australia in the last five years as well as many other residents moving into the area.

“Discover Cumberland is a free educational program helping residents learn about services like booking a clean-up, library home delivery services and waste and recycling services, which contributes to keeping Cumberland active and sustainable,” said Mayor Steve Christou.

Results from community feedback of previous participants in Discover Cumberland have been transformative with 80 per cent of participants saying they now have a ‘high level of understanding’ of Council services, up from 30 per cent at the start of the program.

Residents can now participate in tailored interactive workshops or bus tours delivered in English, Arabic, Korean, Mandarin, Persian, Dari, Farsi, Tamil, Turkish, Urdu, Punjabi, Hindi and Somali.

Residents can attend a quarterly workshop or bus tour, with the next workshop taking place on Monday, 4 November at the Wentworthville Community Centre and the next bus tour taking place on Thursday, 14 November in Merrylands.

The ‘Discover Cumberland’ Resident Booklet is available on the Cumberland Council website. Additionally community groups are able to book a tailored workshop in English or an available community language at a Council site or their own venue in Cumberland.
